Instagram story views: the algorithm behind it

We live in a small world. Do you know, the world has gotten even more closer with the use of technology? Now, you can easily see what is trending, what are the celebrities doing, and a lifestyle of many other people. “Stalking”, a small word but it is an entertainment, a hobby or time pass for many. There are a hundred ways to do it. However, for a common person who just does it for the sake of fun; Instagram stories are a great tool. But do you think the Instagram stories are a great activity or source to do it?

At the time of Instagram story release, many people criticized it and considered it a bad idea terming snapchat their favorite. Although ever since the beginning of year 2017, Instagram story took a great leap and now almost three years later it has 400 million users per day which are even more than the population of United States of America.

The secret behind the Instagram story views

There is not one definite secret behind Instagram story views. Many people tried to find it out, questions were asked but there is still no certain answer. Getting no answer was the reason some theories surfaced among the users. One of the theories was that people who show up at the top of your Instagram story are the ones who check out your profile the most. however, it doesn’t matter if they interact with you or not.

This theory was tested by some of the Reddit users by creating fake profiles and it turned out to be somehow true. Upon several types of research, Instagram officials also almost gave the same answer as was determined by the experiment explained above.

Order of other peoples’ stories on your profile

This feature has an algorithm behind it and no human interference. A person, Paige Thelon, who works in the department of tech communication at Instagram, confirmed that there does exist an algorithm. The algorithm takes information regarding your interests, people you interact with the most and the timing of stories.

All this information combined is directly fed to the algorithm by a specially designed and developed machine learning technology. With a little notice on stories order at our profile, we can also notice that there are barely ten to twenty peoples’ stories and those are the ones that we regularly see.

Instagram determining the order of story views

It may be specified for people who have a lot of time on their hands and little work to do. Now this new experiment was also done by Reddit users where multiple of them were onto determine the order of viewers in Instagram story views. The following were the two results that they obtained:

  • Up to 50 viewers, Instagram shows the views in the chronological order.
  • After 50 viewers, only those profiles start to show up at the top which has interacted the most with the account of respective Instagram story’s uploader.

It should be noted that the number of your story views can never be the same as your followers. Not all of them interacts with you. Although if you buy Instagram story views then your views can be increased, and will be much more than your followers.

Why does the order of views matter?

If not all then most of the social media users are low-key obsessed in one way or another with the number of people, they have interacted with. Or how many people viewed their story or picture. This is the reason order matters for many of them. Some want to know if their ex is still behind them, some want to catch a nosy relative or some just really want to know that if there is someone who might have an innocent crush on them. Still, the question remains the same, does the order of views matter? For a normal person it does not, and it should not. Because, for one, it doesn’t provide any solid information and two, it can really mess up with your head.

Now until or unless you run a business profile or you are some kind of personality, that Instagram story views can really gain you something, the order doesn’t matter at all.

We can conclude our research about Instagram algorithm with few points.

a) There sure exists an Instagram algorithm as confirmed by the workers at Instagram

b) The algorithm has its own system

c) No person (excluding some at Instagram maybe) exactly knows how the algorithm runs or on what facts or figures it is based on.
